An Unexpected Jam Session

Sometimes the most memorable moments happen when no one sees them coming. Aerosmith recently released rare vault footage that stunned fans, showing actor Michael J. Fox performing Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode” alongside Steven Tyler.

The video captures Fox confidently trading guitar licks with the band while Tyler, dressed in his trademark striped pants, belts out the lyrics. For fans of both classic rock and film, it’s a striking crossover of Hollywood and music icons.

Fans React to the Surprise

The band’s Instagram account posted the clip with the caption, “Jamming ‘Johnny B. Goode’ with none other than Marty McFly himself – Michael J. Fox!” The reaction was immediate, with fans flooding the comments. One follower wrote, “WOAH! I’ve never seen this! So badass,” while another added, “This is unheard of. Thanks for sharing.”

While celebrity guest appearances are not unusual in rock, this one carries extra meaning because of Fox’s long connection to the song.

The Back to the Future Link

“Johnny B. Goode” is forever tied to Fox thanks to his performance as Marty McFly in Back to the Future (1985). In one of cinema’s most famous musical scenes, McFly plays the song with Marvin Berry & The Starlighters at a high school dance in 1955 — years before Chuck Berry would release it.

Fox’s performance looked authentic on screen, but behind the scenes it required serious preparation. The actor, who can play guitar, worked with instructor Paul Hanson to perfect the movements. The audio for the scene, however, came from professional musicians.

Fox on Preparing for the Role

Speaking to Empire about the process, Fox explained, “When I did the ‘Johnny B. Goode’ scene, I had a great guitar teacher who taught me how to play. I said to Bob, ‘When I do this scene, I play guitar, so you can finger-sync me. Feel free to cut to my hands any time you want.’ Having said that, it put pressure on me to get it right.”

That attention to detail made the scene unforgettable, and seeing him revisit the same song with Aerosmith decades later gives fans a nostalgic connection.

The Missing Guitar

Adding another twist, the original guitar Fox used during Back to the Future has gone missing. Its whereabouts have become something of a mystery in Hollywood circles.

Fox himself has been vocal about wanting it back, joking that it could be “somewhere lost in the space-time continuum, or in some teamster’s garage.” He has even appealed directly, saying, “If you know where it is, if you know who has it — call us, text us. We need that guitar. I need it.”
