Though Queen officially formed in 1970, their roots go back to 1968 when Brian May and Roger Taylor started a band called Smile. After Smile disbanded, May and Taylor met Freddie Mercury, who joined them as lead vocalist, and John Deacon soon followed on bass. With the lineup complete and a new name—Queen—the stage was set for one of rock’s greatest bands to make history.

After their first live performance in 1971, Queen began to build a following with a series of shows around the UK. Their live energy and Mercury’s dynamic stage presence set them apart from other emerging bands. But it wasn’t until they landed a recording contract with Trident Studios in 1972 that their journey toward superstardom truly began.

Breaking Through with “Seven Seas of Rhye”

In 1973, Queen released their self-titled debut album, Queen. The album showcased their unique blend of rock, glam, and operatic elements, but it was their 1974 performance on the popular British TV show Top of the Pops that really launched them into the spotlight.

At the time, Queen was still an up-and-coming band looking for a big break. Their chance came when they were invited to perform Seven Seas of Rhye, a track from their second album, Queen II. The song had first appeared as an instrumental on their debut album, but for this performance, they brought the fully realized version complete with Mercury’s powerful vocals.

From TV Screen to Rock Stardom

Appearing on Top of the Pops was a launching moment for Queen. The exposure helped them gain a wider audience, and the performance of Seven Seas of Rhye captivated viewers, giving the band the boost they needed to rise in the music world. Soon after, Queen began to climb the charts, and their journey toward global rock stardom was well underway.

With their unique sound, dramatic flair, and Mercury’s unmatched stage presence, Queen would soon evolve from a band looking for their big break into one of the most iconic groups in rock history. Their first television appearance marked the beginning of a career that would change the music world forever.
