Pink Floyd’s social media pages were flooded with criticism this week after the band shared a birthday message for co-founder Roger Waters. The tribute came in the wake of a controversial interview in which Waters made dismissive remarks about the late Ozzy Osbourne, sparking outrage among fans and fellow musicians alike.
The post, shared via Instagram, celebrated Waters’ 82nd birthday and promoted the newly released audio and video recording of his 2023 This Is Not A Drill tour performance in Prague.
“A very Happy Birthday to Roger Waters, who celebrates his 82nd birthday today,” the caption read. “The recording from his 2023 Tour, This Is Not A Drill, performed in Prague, Czech Republic, was recently released in audio and video formats.”
“Disrespectful and Disheartening”: Fans React
While the message was meant as a celebration, many fans took to the comments section to voice their disapproval—largely in response to Waters’ recent comments about Osbourne and Black Sabbath.
“I love Pink Floyd. Brilliant musicians, and will always be a favorite of mine,” one fan wrote. “But it’s quite disgusting, disrespectful, and disheartening that Waters would verbally attack Ozzy like he did. Especially when he’s no longer with us. Some people make life all about themselves and have no respect or empathy for others, and that’s a shame.”
Another fan added: “I love Pink Floyd but Roger dissing Ozzy and Sabbath was low. Ozzy Forever!”
“Why did he attack Ozzy??!! Ozzy was a good person. Waters lost his mind long ago,” read another comment.
Controversial Remarks About a Rock Icon
The backlash stems from an interview Waters gave to The Independent Ink, in which he appeared to show complete disregard for Osbourne’s legacy. During the interview, he said:
“Ozzy Osbourne, who just died, bless him in his whatever that state that he was in his whole life… The music, I have no idea. I couldn’t give a f*ck.”
He went on to add:
“I don’t care about Black Sabbath, I never did.”
The timing of the remarks intensified the reaction. Osbourne passed away in July 2025, just months before the interview was published. As a founding member and frontman of Black Sabbath, Osbourne was widely regarded as one of the pioneers of heavy metal. Known as the “Prince of Darkness,” he sold over 100 million albums worldwide and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice.
Jack Osbourne Responds: “Lack of Respect”
The controversy deepened when Jack Osbourne, Ozzy’s youngest son, publicly called out Waters for his comments. As reported by the Los Angeles Times, Jack criticized the Pink Floyd co-founder’s “lack of respect” for his late father and defended Osbourne’s enduring musical legacy.
His initial Instagram response was flagged by the platform for violating hate speech policies, prompting him to rephrase his message. Despite the revision, the exchange fueled widespread debate about decency, legacy, and professionalism in the music world.
The situation continues to unfold across social media, with many fans calling on Pink Floyd to distance themselves from Waters’ remarks, and others demanding an apology from the musician himself.
