Ozzy Osbourne, the legendary frontman of Black Sabbath and one of heavy metal’s most influential figures, will be laid to rest in his hometown of Birmingham, England, on Wednesday, July 30. A private funeral for family and close friends will follow a public procession that gives fans a chance to pay their respects to the “Prince of Darkness.”
The procession will wind through central Birmingham, passing the iconic Black Sabbath bridge and bench—sites that have become unofficial memorials since Osbourne’s death.
“It was important to the city that we support a fitting, dignified tribute ahead of a private family funeral,” Birmingham’s Lord Mayor Zafar Iqbal told The Guardian. “We know how much this moment will mean to his fans.”
The local Bostin Brass band will provide music during the event, and The Guardian also reports that surviving members of Black Sabbath are “thought to be taking roles” in the tribute. Fans can tune in live via a stream focused on the Black Sabbath bench. The procession starts at 1 PM BST (8 AM EST).
A Sudden Goodbye After a Final Performance
Osbourne passed away on July 22 at the age of 76, just weeks after his final performance at the Back to the Beginning concert. That show included a five-song solo set and a special four-song reunion with the original Black Sabbath lineup—Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward—marking their first performance together since 2005.
The concert, which also featured Metallica, Guns N’ Roses, Slayer, Pantera, and Anthrax, was hailed as a historic moment for metal fans. Osbourne’s death came as a shock so soon after the event.
“It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning,” his family said in a statement. “He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time. Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis.”
Rock and Metal Icons Mourn a Legend
Tributes have poured in from across the rock and metal world. Elton John, a longtime friend and collaborator, shared a heartfelt message:
“He was a dear friend and a huge trailblazer who secured his place in the pantheon of rock gods — a true legend. He was also one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. I will miss him dearly. To Sharon and the family, I send my condolences and love.”
Black Sabbath bandmates also expressed their grief. Guitarist Tony Iommi wrote:
“I just can’t believe it! My dear dear friend Ozzy has passed away only weeks after our show at Villa Park. It’s just such heartbreaking news that I can’t really find the words, there won’t ever be another like him. Geezer, Bill and myself have lost our brother. My thoughts go out to Sharon and all the Osbourne family. Rest in peace Oz. Tony.”
As fans around the world prepare to watch Wednesday’s procession, it’s clear that Osbourne’s legacy as a pioneer of heavy music—and a singular cultural force—will live on for generations.
