A Long-Awaited Return

For the first time since its original release in 1973, Buckingham Nicks—the only studio album by Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham as a duo—will finally return to vinyl on September 19. The reissue comes directly from the original analog master tapes, bringing the long-lost album back to fans after decades of being unavailable.

Released on September 5, 1973, the album didn’t make a big impact at first, but it remained important to many who followed Nicks and Buckingham’s careers. It was recorded at Sound City Studios in Los Angeles and produced by Keith Olsen. The ten-track collection blended their unique songwriting and close harmonies, moving from the soft folk style of “Crystal” to the upbeat sound of “Don’t Let Me Down Again.”

The Duo’s Early Chemistry

“[We] knew what we had as a duo, two songwriters that sang really well together. And it was a very natural thing, from the beginning,” Stevie said. Her words reflected the trust they had in their musical connection from early on.

“… it stands up in a way you hope it would, by these two kids who were pretty young to be doing that work,” Lindsey added. Their youthful energy helped shape the sound that would later influence Fleetwood Mac.

How Fleetwood Mac Took Notice

The album’s influence reached even further in 1974, when Mick Fleetwood walked into Sound City looking for a place to record Fleetwood Mac’s next album. Producer Keith Olsen played “Frozen Love” to show off the studio’s quality—and the song immediately grabbed Fleetwood’s attention.

Not long after, Fleetwood Mac guitarist Bob Welch left the group. Fleetwood contacted Buckingham with an offer to join. Buckingham didn’t accept right away. He told Fleetwood that he and Nicks had to be brought in together. Fleetwood agreed, and on December 31, 1974, both joined the band. That moment marked the beginning of a new era in Fleetwood Mac’s history.

Before the Fame Took Over

While their time with Fleetwood Mac would bring them global success, Buckingham Nicks stands as a rare look into their work before fame. It captures their creative bond and raw sound as rising artists, just before they stepped into the spotlight.
