Big news for Beatles fans! The cast of Sam Mendes’ much-anticipated Beatles biopic project has finally been revealed. Harris Dickinson will play John Lennon, Paul Mescal takes on Paul McCartney, Barry Keoghan steps into the shoes of Ringo Starr, and Joseph Quinn rounds out the group as George Harrison. That’s right—four movies, four Beatles, and one ambitious cinematic journey.
Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes, known for 1917, Skyfall, and American Beauty, surprised the crowd at CinemaCon in Las Vegas by stepping on stage with the film’s cast. And he dropped a major announcement: all four films will be released in April 2028.
Four Stories, One Epic Legacy
“We’re not just making one film about the Beatles – we’re making four,” Mendes told the audience. “Perhaps this is a chance to understand them a little more deeply.”
Mendes explained he had long wanted to make a Beatles film but couldn’t find a single angle to fit their massive legacy. “The story was too big for one film,” he admitted, and he didn’t want to turn it into a TV series either. Instead, each film will explore one band member’s personal journey.
“There had to be a way to tell the epic story for a new generation,” Mendes said. “I can assure you there is still plenty left to explore and I think we found a way to do that.”
A Scripted First with Full Support
This project marks a historic moment: it’s the first time the Beatles, along with Apple and the families of Lennon and Harrison, have given full permission for a scripted film to use their life stories and music. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are also on board.
Not all casting came as a shock. Ridley Scott had previously let it slip that Mescal would be involved, and Starr even joked about Keoghan, saying:
“I believe he’s somewhere taking drum lessons, and I hope not too many.”
The Beatles on Screen, Again
From A Hard Day’s Night to Let It Be, The Beatles’ own films left a lasting mark. While many documentaries and biopics have followed—including Backbeat and Nowhere Boy—this four-film saga aims to capture the full depth of their legendary story like never before.
As the cast said on stage, quoting Sgt. Pepper:
“It’s wonderful to be here, it’s certainly a thrill… we’d like to take you home with us.”
