Neil Young is back with a fresh track, “big change,” featuring his new band, the chrome hearts (And yes, it’s all lowercase!). This electric, hard-hitting single tackles political and social issues with Young’s signature style. The song isn’t tied to any upcoming album, making it a standalone release for now.
Coproduced by Young and Lou Adler, the track delivers stomping rhythms and thought-provoking lyrics. Young sings, “Big change is comin’ / Could be bad and it could be good / … Looks like a collision / Ain’t the worst that you can do.” The single is currently available digitally on the NYA Download Store and all major streaming platforms.
A Busy Year Ahead for Neil
Neil Young is keeping the momentum going in 2024. Alongside “big change,” he’s set to release Oceanside Countryside on March 7. This “lost” album was recorded in 1977 and initially intended for release before 1978’s Comes a Time took its place.
Young has been diving deep into his archives lately, releasing hidden gems and rare tracks. Oceanside Countryside includes material partially featured in last year’s Archives Vol. III (1976-1987) but will now see its debut as originally planned in the late ’70s.
Meet the chrome hearts
Young recorded “big change” with his new band, the chrome hearts, which boasts an impressive lineup. Members include keyboardist Spooner Oldham, guitarist Micah Nelson, bassist Corey McCormick, and drummer Anthony LoGerfo. The rhythm section has also worked with Young in Promise of the Real, led by Micah’s brother, Lukas Nelson. Both Nelsons are sons of country music legend Willie Nelson.
Young has been steadily producing new work in recent years, including 2023’s All Roads Lead Home with Crazy Horse and 2022’s World Record. Fans also enjoyed Before and After, which revisits some of his older material with a fresh twist.
With “big change” out now and Oceanside Countryside on the horizon, Neil Young continues to show that his creative well is far from running dry.
