During a special charity event in Lake Hughes, California, Neil Young and Stephen Stills dug into their storied past on Saturday night (Oct. 5). The concert, Harvest Moon: A Gathering, aimed to raise funds for The Painted Turtle, a camp for kids with serious illnesses, and The Bridge School, which Young has been a longtime supporter of.
The night featured performances by several artists, including John Mayer, Lily Meola, and the world music group Massanga. Still, the spotlight was on Young and Stills, whose performance brought nostalgic energy to the crowd.
Rare Reunion of Legends
Opening their set with “Long May You Run,” the duo instantly connected with the audience, performing the title track from their 1976 collaboration. Next, they played “Human Highway,” a track initially intended for CSNY’s follow-up to Deja Vu, but later featured on Young’s 1978 solo album Comes a Time.
The most surprising moment of the night came when the pair played “Hung Upside Down,” a Buffalo Springfield song that hadn’t been performed live in 57 years. Stills quipped before they began:
“The worst four words you can hear at a concert are ‘here’s a new song,’ but this is a new version of an old one that took two centuries to finish.”
Ending on a High Note
The night continued with more classics like “Love The One You’re With,” “Heart of Gold, and the timeless Buffalo Springfield anthem “For What It’s Worth.” The highlight came when John Mayer joined the duo on stage for an electrifying version of “Rockin’ in the Free World,” sending the audience home on a high note.
The evening was a perfect blend of legendary music and charitable giving, proving once again that these rock icons haven’t lost their touch while helping raise funds for important causes.
