A New Chapter for the Journey Guitarist?

Neal Schon, founding guitarist of the legendary rock band Journey, has sparked curiosity after unveiling a new logo labeled “Journey Beyond” on his social media platforms. Accompanied by the cryptic caption “Into the future,” the post has prompted speculation about a potential new musical direction.

The teaser quickly gained traction among fans and music insiders, many of whom are wondering whether “Journey Beyond” represents a new project—or possibly an offshoot band. That speculation intensified after it was revealed that Schon filed a trademark application for the name earlier this year.

Trademark Filing Suggests Major Musical Plans

In April, Schon officially submitted a trademark application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for “Journey Beyond.” The filing covers a wide range of media formats, including musical sound recordings, downloadable music files, CDs, DVDs, video recordings, and more—indicating plans for a significant music release under the new name.

While the trademark has yet to be assigned to an examining attorney, its comprehensive scope suggests Schon is preparing for something substantial. It’s a strategic move that honors Journey’s legacy while establishing a brand identity that stands on its own.

Music outlet Ultimate Classic Rock confirmed that the application is still under review, but Schon’s proactive step signals serious intent to develop this new venture.

Legal Disputes Ease as Schon Looks Ahead

The trademark filing arrives at a time when tensions within Journey’s current lineup may be easing. For years, the band has been embroiled in legal disputes—most notably with former frontman Steve Perry, who previously sued Schon and longtime keyboardist Jonathan Cain over trademark rights to several classic Journey songs.

However, Perry recently dropped the lawsuit, as reported by KIXI and 97.7 The River, potentially signaling a thaw in the band’s ongoing internal conflicts. This resolution may have cleared the way for Schon to explore new creative opportunities without the shadow of legal uncertainty.

If “Journey Beyond” is indeed a new project, it could mark both a continuation and a reimagining of the Journey sound—spearheaded by the guitarist who helped define it. Whether it’s a solo endeavor, a new group, or a broader brand initiative, one thing is clear: Neal Schon is far from finished. He’s charting a course for the future—beyond the past, but never too far from it.
