A Rock Legend’s Final Day
On November 12, 2008, John Graham “Mitch” Mitchell, the drummer for The Jimi Hendrix Experience, was found dead in his hotel room at the Benson Hotel in Portland, Oregon. He had just completed the Experience Hendrix Tour 2008 and was beginning a short vacation before returning to his native England. The Multnomah County medical examiner ruled his death as being of natural causes.
At 62 years old, Mitch Mitchell left behind a powerful musical legacy. He had been performing in tribute shows celebrating the music of Jimi Hendrix, with the tour’s final stop taking place in Portland.
From London to Woodstock
Born on July 9, 1946, in Ealing, Middlesex, England, Mitchell developed a unique style by combining jazz influences with rock drumming. He joined Hendrix’s band in 1966, helping shape albums like Are You Experienced?, Axis: Bold as Love, and Electric Ladyland. His performances at the Monterey and Woodstock festivals cemented his place in rock history.
His jazz-inspired rhythms set him apart from other drummers of his era and earned him recognition as one of the greatest rock drummers of all time. In 2016, Rolling Stone ranked him No. 8 on its list of the “100 Greatest Drummers of All Time.”

Health Struggles and Final Tour
In the years before his death, Mitchell faced several health challenges, including a weakened immune system and fatigue from cancer-related complications. During the Experience Hendrix tour, his strength had declined; in his final show, a drum technician stepped in to help him complete the set. That tour would become his last.
In the early hours of November 12, he was found in his hotel room after asking for time to rest. The sudden loss deeply affected fans and fellow musicians, highlighting how much of an influence he had on the world of rock music.
Remembering His Impact
Though his career with Hendrix lasted only a few years, Mitchell’s influence spans generations. His drumming style, blending improvisation and power, became a key part of the Hendrix sound.
After his passing, tributes poured in from across the music world. Musicians and fans alike remembered Mitchell not only for his incredible talent but also for the creativity and energy he brought to every performance.
