102 Edith Grove was the one-bedroom flat in Chelsea where Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and Brian Jones lived before they became titans in rock ‘n roll. It was a small, humble apartment with grimy windows and full of dirty dishes in the sink. It may not have seemed like much back then but it has since become iconic and infamous for being an absolute mess.
In fact, in 2016, it was recreated as part of The Rolling Stones’ first exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery titled Exhibitionism. The lounge, bedroom, and kitchen featured even the smallest details like milk bottles topped off with cigarette ends, discarded egg shells, old cereal box, and cracked floors. It was an interesting look at the history of the band before they took over the world.
In the interview below, Jagger and Richards reminisced their time at Edith Grove and recalled stories of when they still lived there. They had one bedroom that the pair shared along with another roommate James Phelge. Jones slept in the living room. They even recalled their carpet which they called “horrendous”, and we can only imagine why. It was brown and apparently “smelly”. Watch them talk more about it below.
