Michael McDonald Admits He Failed Selling Drugs

In his new memoir, What a Fool Believes, singer Michael McDonald opens up about a foolish venture from his past involving cocaine sales. This happened during the 1970s while touring with Steely Dan. McDonald was contributing backing vocals to their albums at that time. And aside from music as their common ground, he and his bandmate Walter Becker had something else in common – cocaine.
McDonald and Becker thought of a way to get fast cash and get themselves a share of this recreational drug.
Their plan was very simple, or so they thought: purchase a large quantity of high-quality cocaine, sell it discreetly to friends for profit, and indulge themselves with the rest of the supply.
However, the plan for the quick business was somehow short-lived. McDonald recalls how they impulsively snorted most of their cocaine even before they were able to make their sales, so it left them with little to distribute. Unfortunately, what was supposed to be a potential side hustle quickly turned into a chaotic binge, depleted supplies, and dashed hopes.
Michael McDonald Tours This Summer
Aside from being busy with the release of his memoir, McDonald remains active in his music career. He is set to hit the road with a busy touring schedule lined up for the summer. The singer is scheduled to perform with the Doobie Brothers for an extensive series of North American shows. Fans can also expect performances alongside the Eagles as part of their Long Goodbye farewell tour.
MacDonald first reunited with the Doobies in 2019. A 50th anniversary tour was also set with the group but the plan was put on hold because of the pandemic and was eventually launched in 2021. It marked McDonald’s first tour with them after 25 years.
