Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine Dreams of a Final Gig on the Moon
Society of Rock
As Megadeth prepares to close the chapter on their storied career, frontman Dave Mustaine is setting the bar extraordinarily high for the band’s final show. With their seventeenth studio album and accompanying world tour confirmed as the band’s last, Mustaine told Metal Hammer he envisions a truly out-of-this-world finale—a concert in space.
“I hope we’ll be playing up in space,” Mustaine said. “I think that will be a really fitting climax. And I’m not talking about on the side of a vomit comet. A gig on the Moon, a full moon landing, that would be cool.”
Looking to Space for Inspiration
Mustaine points to a wave of celebrity astronauts as proof that his cosmic dream might one day be possible.
“I saw they sent up a bunch of celebrities into space and I thought, ‘Well, if them, why not me?’ You know? I’m just watching how that all progresses. I know Elon Musk and Richard Branson were working on interstellar travel. I think people are going to be traveling to space a lot sooner than you think.”
Asked if he was joking, Mustaine doubled down on his conviction. “People already travel over 40,000 feet altitude, and when you get to that kind of atmosphere you’re basically already in space,” he said, though the technical boundary of space is much higher, around 327,000 feet. “So I do think it’s going to happen. The question is, are people going to be able to inhabit the moon?”
On the idea of actually living off Earth, Mustaine kept his trademark humor.
“Personally, I’d never want to live on a planet away from the world we live in. People were talking about a trip to Mars, but all I can imagine is somebody suddenly going, ‘Oh! I forgot my toothbrush!’ That would be the longest flight ever!”
A Cosmic Finale for a Legendary Career
While a lunar or orbital concert may seem far-fetched, Mustaine’s ambitious vision underscores the grandeur he wants for Megadeth’s swan song. After all, if Metallica can headline a show in Antarctica, why not Megadeth play where no band has gone before?
The band’s final, self-titled album is set to be released this January and will feature a cover of Metallica’s Ride the Lightning. Fans can also order a limited copper-and-emerald vinyl variant through the official Metal Hammer store, ensuring that Megadeth’s last chapter is celebrated in both sound and style.
