Nicko McBrain, the drummer who has been with Iron Maiden for over four decades, is setting down his drumsticks for the last time with the band. In an emotional announcement shared on Iron Maiden’s official website, McBrain shared his decision to step back from the band’s touring life. The message was clear:
“After much consideration, it is with both sorrow and joy, I announce my decision to take a step back from the grind of the extensive touring lifestyle. Today, Sat, Dec 7th, Sao Paulo will be my final gig with Iron Maiden. I wish the band much success moving forward.“
Overcoming Health Challenges with Band Support
McBrain’s decision comes after a challenging health episode; he suffered a stroke in January 2023. Despite the setback, he made a remarkable return to the band just four months later. However, McBrain openly admitted that he was not yet fully recovered, which affected his ability to perform at his best. “I unfortunately haven’t been able to give you lot 100% of my performance,” he confessed early on in his recovery process.
By July 2024, McBrain shared more about his ordeal and the incredible support he received from his bandmates. They showed utmost understanding and flexibility, changing their setlists to accommodate his current playing capacity. “It ain’t the old Nicko – it’s not the old one by a long shot. But at least it’s part of me. And my band, bless their hearts, Steve Harris and the rest of the guys turn around and say, ‘If you can’t do something in a song, we just won’t do that song.’”
He joined Iron Maiden in 1982 and made his recording debut with the band on their 1983 album, “Piece of Mind.” His tenure with the band has been nothing short of historic, contributing to Iron Maiden’s towering status in the world of heavy metal.

McBrain’s New Chapter
Despite stepping back from touring, McBrain is determined to stay connected with the Iron Maiden family. He’s looking forward to being involved in various projects and businesses related to the band. “Touring with Maiden the last 42 years has been an incredible journey,” he stated. Expressing his gratitude and love toward his bandmates, he added, “To my bandmates, you made it a dream come true and I love you! I look into the future with much excitement and great hope! I’ll be seeing you soon, may God bless you all, and, of course, ‘Up the Irons!‘”
Rod Smallwood, Iron Maiden’s manager, also shared sentiments, highlighting McBrain’s invaluable contribution to the band over the years. “Thank you for being an irrepressible force behind the drum kit for Maiden for 42 years and my friend for even longer. I speak on behalf of all the band when I say we will miss you immensely! The band and I all have a thousand great memories of the past 42 years, great gigs, copious platinum and gold discs and awards, love from the fans and one beer too many on too many occasions! Such a bond is forever! And, as Steve Harris says, ‘Nicko is and will always be part of the Maiden family’.”
As Iron Maiden concludes their 2024 The Future Past tour, they also prepare to usher in a new era. They’ve confirmed that McBrain’s replacement is already chosen and will be announced shortly, promising fans that “Maiden always get their man.” This marks a significant change for the band as they gear up for their next tour, Run For Your Lives, set to start in May 2025.
