A Farewell from the Drummer

Matt Cameron, Pearl Jam’s longest-serving drummer, has officially announced he is leaving the band. The news was shared by Cameron and Pearl Jam through social media on Monday.

“After 27 fantastic years, I have taken my final steps down the drum riser for the mighty Pearl Jam,” Cameron wrote. “Much love and respect to Jeff, Ed, Mike and Stone for inviting me into the band in 1998 and for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, filled with friendships, artistry, challenges and laughter. I am forever grateful to the crew, staff and fans the world over. It’s been an incredible journey. More to follow. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.”

From Soundgarden to Pearl Jam

Before joining Pearl Jam in 1998, Cameron was already well-known in the grunge world. He played drums for Soundgarden starting in 1986 until their breakup in 1997, then again from 2010 to 2017 during their reunion.

Cameron brought his drumming talents to every Pearl Jam album since Binaural in 2000. His long career in both bands led to him being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice—once for each group.

Pearl Jam Pays Tribute

In a statement posted on social media, Pearl Jam honored Cameron’s influence and time with the band. They praised his earlier work in Soundgarden and Skin Yard and expressed their appreciation.

“Matt Cameron has been a singular and true powerhouse of a musician and drummer,” the band said. “He has propelled the last 27 years of Pearl Jam live shows and studio recordings. It was a deeply important chapter for our group and we wish him well always. He will be deeply missed and is forever our friend in art and music. We love you Matt.”

No Replacement Named Yet

Pearl Jam did not mention who might take over as drummer or what the future line-up would look like. Cameron’s departure comes as a major change for the group, especially after such a long and steady role behind the kit.

Fans responded with messages of support and thanks, recognizing Cameron’s impact on the band’s music and live performances. While Cameron hinted that more updates may be shared soon, no other details have been released yet.
