Fatal Accident in Atlanta

William Brent Hinds, former lead guitarist and co-founder of the heavy metal band Mastodon, was killed in a motorcycle crash late Wednesday night in Atlanta. Police reported that Hinds was riding a Harley Davidson when a BMW SUV failed to yield while turning at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Boulevard. The collision happened at around 11:35 p.m. The Fulton County medical examiner’s office later confirmed his death.

Hinds was 51 years old. His sudden passing shocked the music community, especially in Atlanta, where Mastodon first began building its reputation more than two decades ago.

Mastodon’s Statement of Grief

Mastodon addressed the news in an emotional post on Instagram, sharing their deep sense of loss. “We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force with whom we’ve shared so many triumphs, milestones, and the creation of music that has touched the hearts of so many,” the band wrote. They added, “Our hearts are with Brent’s family, friends, and fans. At this time, we please ask that you respect everyone’s privacy during this difficult time.”

The band described themselves as being in a “state of unfathomable sadness and grief,” reflecting the close bond they shared with Hinds since their early days together.

A Founding Member of Mastodon

Hinds co-founded Mastodon in Atlanta in 2000 alongside bassist Troy Sanders, guitarist Bill Kelliher, and drummer Brann Dailor. The band quickly rose to prominence with its unique sound, becoming one of the most respected names in heavy metal.

Earlier this year, in March, the group announced that they had “mutually decided to part ways” with Hinds. However, just this month, Hinds publicly stated that he was “kicked out” of the band, highlighting tensions before his untimely death.
