To celebrate what would have been John Lennon’s 80th birthday, Sean Lennon, John’s son, hosted a special program on BBC Radio 2 in October 2020.
In this heartfelt tribute, Sean interviewed Paul McCartney, his half-brother Julian Lennon, and Elton John—John Lennon’s godfather. It was an opportunity for them to share memories of the legendary musician and reflect on his incredible impact on music.
Paul McCartney’s Fond Memories
In his chat with Sean, Paul McCartney reflected on his close bond with John, recalling how they grew up together and developed as artists. McCartney said:
“Number one, we were good. Right there.
“Number two, we’d grown up together. From little kids, we’d taken the first steps together, we kind of learned to walk together, then we learned to run. And the fact that each of us was influencing the other was very important.”
The conversation was full of nostalgic moments, with McCartney even performing a snippet of one of the first songs he and Lennon ever wrote together, called Just Fun. He humorously admitted:
“There were a few that were clearly young songwriters who don’t quite know how to do it.”
Rediscovering “Let It Be”
Sean and McCartney also discussed the Beatles’ final days, particularly during the recording of Let It Be. McCartney mentioned how Peter Jackson’s documentary, which features 58 hours of outtakes from that time, gave him a new perspective. McCartney explained:
“For years, when people say, ‘Oh, Let It Be,’ I go, ‘Yeah, I didn’t really like it because it was such a gloomy period.’
“But then talking to Peter Jackson…he says, ‘No, you’re like jolly and stuff.’”
This special conversation between Sean and McCartney offered fans a rare glimpse into the personal and creative relationship between two of music’s greatest icons.
