The third track “If Darkness Had a Son” from Metallica‘s upcoming album 72 Seasons, has been recently made available for streaming.
Before transitioning into a mid-tempo stomp that sounds similar to the classic “Enter Sandman,” the song begins with a martial drum beat and chugging guitar. In this new song, fans can hear the lines, “If darkness had a son, here I am / Temptation is his father / If darkness had a son, here I am / I bathe in holy water / Temptation, leave me be.”
The newly-released song was also uploaded by the band on TikTok a few days ago, with a caption: “duet this.” This is the third single from the upcoming 72 Seasons album, which will be released on April 14. Other songs that fans should also listen to are the thrashing lead song “Lux Æterna” and the anthemic, rock-oriented follow-up “Screaming Suicide.”
In an official statement, singer James Hetfield discussed the concept behind the song. He stated:
“Seventy-two seasons. The first 18 years of our lives that form our true or false selves. The concept that we were told ‘who we are’ by our parents. A possible pigeonholing around what kind of personality we are. I think the most interesting part of this is the continued study of those core beliefs and how it affects our perception of the world today. Much of our adult experience is reenactment or reaction to these childhood experiences. Prisoners of childhood or breaking free of those bondages we carry.”
The huge M72 global tour, which is about to take place from April 2023 through September 2024, will be the band’s next big plan after releasing 72 Seasons. Pantera, Mammoth WVH, and Greta Van Fleet were reported to join them.
