At least in the hearts of fans and on the radio, Fleetwood Mac is still vibrant after more than twenty years since their final studio album. Proving the band’s ageless appeal, songs like “Everywhere, “Dreams,” and “Go Your Own Way” keep playing on repeat. Given their career filled with popular hit songs and legendary controversy, it’s hardly surprising that they remain among the most loved bands in rock.

A Band Built on Change

In the late 1960s, Fleetwood Mac began as a British blues group. The band made a major move to the United States in 1974 following several lineup changes, including the departure of founder Peter Green. A new level of music was added when Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks joined. The band’s next chapter was sparked by their special chemistry, and their self-titled album from 1975 became an enormous hit.

Turning Left After ‘Rumours’

Following the record-breaking success of Rumours in 1977, the band was emotionally drained. The album may have been full of radio hits, but it came from a place of heartbreak and internal conflict. Instead of trying to top it with more polished pop, Lindsey Buckingham wanted to shake things up. That led to Tusk—Fleetwood Mac’s most experimental project.

Inspired by new wave bands like Talking Heads, Buckingham pushed the group to embrace a more offbeat, artsy sound. Tusk may not have sold as much as Rumours, but it became a fan favorite and a critical success.

Buckingham’s Bold Favorite

To this day, Buckingham stands by Tusk as his top pick. “I was very interested in confounding external expectations,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “For that reason, not just the song ‘Tusk,’ but the album Tusk is probably my favourite album. Not necessarily for the music, but for why we did it.”

He explained that the creative risk helped shape his solo career too, calling it “a tightrope to walk between the big machine of Fleetwood Mac and the small machine of solo work.”

Sometimes, breaking the mold is what keeps the magic alive.
