Reflecting on His Departure
After two decades as the lead singer of Foreigner, Kelly Hansen is officially stepping away from the band. Hansen, 64, first revealed his plans to leave during an appearance on The Voice back in May. Now, as his final shows approach, he’s opening up about the decision and what lies ahead.
“I’m trying not to use the word retirement. I don’t even know what that means,” Hansen told People magazine. “I’m not looking for future work. I’m so fortunate to be able to make that choice.”
His announcement sparked speculation among fans, with some wondering if health issues were behind his decision. Hansen quickly dismissed those rumors, assuring fans he’s in great shape. “I’m completely healthy,” he said. Instead, his choice came after reflecting on life during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
Finding Peace at Home
Hansen explained that being forced to slow down and stay home during the pandemic changed his perspective. “I started to have the sense of being home,” he shared. “I started to say, ‘Wow, this is something I haven’t had in my life for a very long time.’ I had this feeling of what it’s like to be home and also with a sense of, I feel I have some kind of stability financially and otherwise, where I could start thinking about making a choice that’s different than what I’m doing.”
He added, “Although I love what I do, I’ve been in this business nearly 50 years, and I put in my time.”
Hansen’s comments reveal a deep appreciation for what he’s accomplished, but also a desire for a quieter, more personal chapter in his life — one that doesn’t involve the constant movement and noise of touring.
Preparing for the Final Shows
As of October 6, Hansen had just two shows left before officially leaving Foreigner. The singer marked the moment with an emotional post on Instagram. “As the shows are winding down for me, I still feel all the encouragement and support. Wow, only 2 left. Thank you all so much!… OK & TX ROCK!!” he wrote.
Fans quickly flooded the comments to show their appreciation for the singer who revitalized the band over the past 20 years. “Wishing I could be present for your last shows but cannot,” one fan commented. “Thank you for breathing new life into the band 20 years ago and for your amazing showmanship! Wishing you happiness and continued success in this next chapter.”

Life Beyond the Stage
While many artists find it difficult to step away from performing, Hansen appears ready to embrace the next phase. “I want to enjoy and live my life. I have many other passions and pursuits,” he told People. He went on to say, “I really am not troubled by living a smaller life. I really am not. I mean, I’ve lived, my whole life has been loud music and bright lights and a lot of s***, and I spent a lot of my time trying to avoid f****** landmines, and I don’t want to have to do that. I just want to live my life with my friends and my family and just dig it.”
Fans will get one last chance to see Hansen perform with Foreigner on October 11, when the band closes out this era with a final show at the Hard Rock in Atlantic City.
