Keith Moon, the iconic drummer of The Who, earned a reputation for wild, outrageous, and often destructive behavior throughout his brief life. Joining the British rock giants in the mid-1960s gave Moon the perfect outlet for his fierce energy, whether behind the drum kit or in the chaos he left in hotel rooms, venues, cars, and encounters with groupies. But as Henry Paul, guitarist of the Outlaws, revealed in a 2025 interview with Guitar World, Moon’s reckless antics didn’t stop when he wasn’t onstage with The Who — in fact, they often seemed to escalate.

A Tuxedo and a Bottle of Wine

Paul, who toured briefly with Moon in the mid-1970s when the Outlaws opened for The Who, recalled that while most members of The Who kept to themselves during downtime, Moon was more than willing to hang out. On one occasion, the musicians were dining at a fancy restaurant, dressed in sharp tuxedos that hardly fit the usual image of rock ‘n’ roll troublemakers. However, their refined appearance didn’t fool everyone. According to Paul, an American couple dining nearby mistook Moon for a waiter. Seizing the moment, Moon grabbed a bottle of wine and drenched the unsuspecting man with it. “He must have paid hundreds of pounds for the guy’s wet clothes,” Paul said with a mix of disbelief and amusement.

A Chaotic Spirit That Defined an Era

Despite the shock of seeing a tuxedo-clad Keith Moon pour wine on strangers, the Outlaws were not deterred from touring with The Who. As Paul put it, “Keith lived in a different place on this Earth.” Moon’s wildness was simply part of the package that made The Who such a formidable presence in rock music. Paul praised the band’s raw power and distinct personalities, highlighting frontman Roger Daltrey’s magnetic stage presence and Pete Townshend’s wild intensity. The infamous wine incident occurred on a UK tour, which adds an ironic twist since a local Brit might have recognized Moon instantly, making the mistaken identity all the more puzzling. Whether it was a prank or a reaction to feeling slighted, the incident perfectly encapsulated the chaotic energy that made Keith Moon an unforgettable figure in rock history.
