Les Binks, the former drummer for the well-known heavy metal band Judas Priest, has passed away at age 73. Binks was part of Judas Priest from 1977 to 1979. During his time with the band, he played on two major studio albums: “Stained Class” and “Killing Machine,” both released in 1978. He also performed on “Unleashed In The East,” a highly respected live album from 1979.
The current members of Judas Priest expressed their sorrow and respect through a public statement. They said, “We are deeply saddened about the passing of Les and send our love to his family, friends, and fans. The acclaimed drumming he provided was first class – demonstrating his unique techniques, flair, style, and precision – Thank you Les – your acclaim will live on…..”

Hall of Fame Recognition and Binks’s Departure
In 2022, Binks and other key members of Judas Priest, including Rob Halford, Ian Hill, Glenn Tipton, Scott Travis, KK Downing, and Dave Holland, were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This event marked Binks’s last public appearance with his former bandmates.
Binks left the band in 1979 due to disagreements during the production of “Unleashed In The East.” In explaining his departure, Binks recounted the circumstances that led to his decision. He said it “caused a rift between me and [Judas Priest’s] manager and ultimately led to my decision to leave the band. I just didn’t see the point in continuing to work with a band whose manager didn’t want me to receive any payment for that live album. A completely ludicrous scenario. It’s a classic heavy metal live album which I believe eventually went platinum and he didn’t want me to receive a penny for it. Crazy f**ker. But that’s what happens if a band allows someone like that to manage them — they lose members. So exit drummer number four.”
Legacy and Continuing Influence
“Unleashed In The East” achieved platinum status in 1989, a decade after Binks’s departure. Dave Holland took over as drummer until 1989, after which Scott Travis became the longest-serving drummer for Judas Priest. Travis has now been with the band for over three decades and has contributed to six studio albums.
Binks’s influence on the world of heavy metal remains significant. His unique playing style and contributions to Judas Priest during his brief but impactful stint with the band have left an enduring mark on fans and musicians alike.
