Arnel Pineda, a Filipino musician known worldwide as the lead singer of the legendary rock band Journey, is now wanted by police in his home country. A court in Quezon City issued a bench warrant after Pineda repeatedly missed court appearances related to a domestic abuse lawsuit filed by his wife.
Judge Mary Ann Punzalan-Toribio of the Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 99 issued the warrant on September 10, following Pinedaโs failure to appear for his arraignment. A sheriff attempted to serve the warrant two days later, but Pineda was reportedly nowhere to be found. The court had previously set bail at โฑ72,000, but it was revoked and forfeited to the government.
Allegations of Emotional and Psychological Abuse
Under the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act (RA 9262), Pineda faces charges related to emotional and psychological abuse, public humiliation, and financial neglect. The complaint alleges that Pinedaโs wife endured mistreatment at home for years. Prosecutors stated she was โverbally assaulted, manipulated, and coerced,โ prompting her to eventually leave their residence.
A Rock and Roll Relationship That Unraveled
The coupleโs troubled history dates back to 2003, when they were still living together as partners. Sources say their relationship began to deteriorate after Pinedaโs wife discovered his infidelity. Despite this, they married in 2008โthe same year Journey guitarist Neal Schon discovered Pineda singing on YouTube and invited him to join the band, launching his international career.
At home, however, the situation worsened for Pineda, who had grown famous and wealthy. His wife claims she endured โpublic ridicule and controlling behavior,โ even while supporting him by helping invest his earnings and raising their two children.
The Legal Battle Intensifies
In response to the accusations, Pineda filed an adultery complaint against his wife, which she vehemently denies. His lawyers argue that the domestic violence allegations are retaliatory and lack solid evidence. Despite the ongoing disputes, the court maintains jurisdiction and continues to advance the case.
The next hearing is scheduled for September 17. If Pineda fails to appear again, the bench warrant will remain active, and he risks arrest.
