Jonathan Cain Wins Legal Battle With Neal Schon

Jonathan Cain has claimed a win in his legal battle against Journey bandmate Neal Schon. On August 28, it was announced that Schon had “ceded to Mr. Cain’s demand” to appoint a third director to their joint touring company, Freedom 2020.

According to the ruling:

“Mr. Schon is prohibited from unilaterally acting on behalf of the Company and all future deadlock between Mr. Cain and Mr. Schon will be broken by the vote of the Custodian.”

Cain’s representatives stated:

“Mr. Cain is elated with the outcome and looks forward to moving beyond this matter so that Journey can continue the band’s 50th Anniversary Freedom Tour.”

This decision appears to bring an end to the months-long legal conflict. Cain had filed a lawsuit in July accusing Schon of excessive spending, including “up to $10,000 per night” and maxing out the band’s American Express card. Cain’s legal team argued that Schon’s actions caused “unforeseen strains on cash flow” that posed “a severe threat of harm to the company and to Journey’s storied history of musical greatness.”

These claims echo a previous lawsuit Cain filed against Schon in 2022, alleging that the guitarist charged over $1 million in personal expenses to the band’s card, including a one-month $400,000 shopping spree.

Journey Presses On with Tour Amid Legal Battles

Despite these legal disputes, Journey has continued touring. The band’s stadium tour with Def Leppard and Steve Miller is set to wrap up on September 8 in Denver. Journey also has upcoming concerts in South America and Japan later this fall.

Meanwhile, a series of shows planned for the U.K. and Ireland were canceled shortly after Cain filed his lawsuit. It’s unclear if the cancellations were directly related to the ongoing legal issues.

Throughout the turmoil, Cain and Schon have kept the band on the road, navigating their legal battles both in court and on social media, while still pushing forward with Journey’s 50th Anniversary Freedom Tour.
