Jonathan Cain Says Neal Schon Is Now Backpedaling On Their Previous Agreement

Jonathan Cain has filed a new legal motion accusing his Journey bandmate Neal Schon of backtracking on a mediated agreement meant to settle their ongoing dispute over band finances. Last week, Schon publicly stated that he had agreed to Cain’s request to appoint a neutral third party to help manage Freedom 2020, the business subsidiary they created to oversee their touring operations. However, Cain’s latest filing with a Delaware judge claims that Schon is now trying to “inappropriately limit the role of the custodian.”
Cain’s attorney, Kasey H. DeSantis, argued that Schon’s actions are “inconsistent with respondent’s counsel’s prior communications with the court and Discovery Facilitator Joseph Slights explicitly agreeing to the appointment of a third deadlock-breaking director.”
The feud escalated in late July when Cain sued Schon, accusing him of excessive spending that put a strain on the band’s ongoing stadium tour with Def Leppard and Steve Miller. Cain alleged that Schon’s spending habits were costing the group up to $10,000 a night and that Schon had maxed out their American Express card again.
Inside Journey’s ‘Very Toxic Work Environment’
Judge J. Travis Laster expedited the case and, at an Aug. 7 hearing, appointed former Delaware judge Joseph Slights to mediate. In response, Schon accused Cain of creating a “very toxic work environment” and called his actions “slanderous” on social media. Despite these accusations, the two reportedly reached a tentative agreement on Aug. 22, but Cain is now asking Judge Laster to approve an earlier version of that agreement.
Amid this legal turmoil, Journey’s fall 2024 shows in the U.K. and Ireland were abruptly canceled following Cain’s lawsuit. It’s still unclear if these cancellations were directly related to the financial disputes or the ongoing legal battle. Meanwhile, Journey’s current tour dates with Def Leppard are set to conclude in early September, marking their second tour together since they first joined forces in 2018.
