Jon Bon Jovi is downplaying the drama around a recent incident in which he helped a woman who appeared to be in distress. While shooting a music video in Nashville last September, Bon Jovi noticed a woman on the wrong side of a bridge guardrail, seemingly ready to jump into the Cumberland River below.
A Moment of Connection
In heartwarming video clips, you can see Bon Jovi approaching her calmly and engaging in conversation. They ended up sharing a hug, and he, along with an assistant, helped her climb back over the rail. Bon Jovi continued to talk with her until emergency services arrived. “We’d all do the same,” he remarked during a recent conversation with Stephen Colbert at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark.
Bon Jovi emphasized that the incident highlights the reality of mental health struggles. He shared:
“This lady, she was completely coherent, had all of her wits. She said to me, ‘Look at me. I’m in paper scrubs with no shoes, no phone, no money, nowhere to go. They let me walk out of the hospital.’ … She said, ‘I am not suicidal or homicidal.’”
Trained for Crisis
Colbert pointed out that the woman was still in a dangerous situation, to which Bon Jovi agreed. “Obviously on the wrong side of the rail – in a situation,” he said. He talked with her until the police, fire, and emergency rescue teams arrived, along with a therapist who could provide further support. Bon Jovi confirmed that the woman received help after leaving the bridge, adding:
“But that’s all: I was just there.”
Following the incident, reports surfaced that Bon Jovi had undergone “extensive training in speaking with individuals experiencing a crisis” through his JBJ Soul Foundation. Founded in 2006, this organization aims to tackle hunger, poverty, and homelessness at the community level, showcasing Bon Jovi’s commitment to making a positive impact.
