Van Zant Talks Passion Project
He’s seen it all, done it all, and rocked ’em all – but there’s one thing Lynyrd Skynyrd frontman Johnny Van Zant still wants to do and before he leaves this world, he aims to make a decades long dream a reality. In October 2009, Johnny was gracious enough to sit down with Ken Morton, Jr. for an interview with The 9513 and held nothing back as he talked his life, his career, even what he loves to do when he’s not on the road with Lynyrd Skynyrd.
The part we loved the most, however, was towards the end of the interview when he revealed one of his longtime dreams – to one day craft a gospel album, shifting towards a genre of music that’s always touched his soul and fed his spirit. Even better, it’s an experience he’d love to share with someone close to his heart: his big brother, Donnie.
“Before I check out of here, I’d like to do a gospel album. That would probably be my first choice,” he shared.
“I’d like to do that with my brother too. “Get Right With The Man” had a lot of gospel tinge to it. So did our second album for that matter. We believe in Jesus and God above and when you have that in your heart, you write about those kind of things when you’re a writer.”
More than anyone, Johnny Van Zant has an intimate understanding of what it is to follow your heart creatively, pursuing not just the projects you’ve devoted your entire life to but the ones that feed your soul and bring you back to earth when life, as it generally does, breaks your plans in the best and worst of ways. While right now it looks like we’ll have to wait a little bit longer for Johnny’s gospel album to come to life, we’re immensely excited to hear what’s on his mind and on his heart and the incredible way he’s going to convey that through a medium he knows all too well: song.
