Joe Walsh, famous for some of rock’s most memorable riffs, is auctioning one of his most cherished instruments: the 1966 Framus Strato Gold Deluxe Sunburst 12-string guitar used on 1972’s Barnstorm album. This guitar played a crucial role in his early solo career. Over 800 items from Walsh’s life and career will go under the hammer December 16-17 at West Hollywood’s Troubadour via Julien’s Auctions. The “Life’s Been Good” collection includes guitars, cars, amps, ham radios, stage outfits, and historic rock memorabilia. A portion of the proceeds will support VetsAid, Walsh’s nonprofit for veterans.

A Glimpse Into Walsh’s Musical History

The 12-string Framus holds special significance, as it was key to the Barnstorm album, his first record after leaving the James Gang. Walsh recalls that tuning it was tricky, especially while under the influence, but it shaped the acoustic-driven sound of the album, featuring classics like “Mother Says” and “Turn to Stone.” Other auction highlights include his sheepskin jacket from the James Gang Thirds album cover, an Epiphone guitar from Analog Man, Eagles memorabilia such as a stage-worn “So What” jersey, and rare instruments like a Bohemian Guitars Surf Wax Can guitar, a 1952 Bronson Singing Electric Lap Steel used on Neil Young’s Chrome Dreams II, and a D’Angelico NYL-2 from a performance with Paul McCartney. Even Walsh’s moon boots are part of the collection.

Supporting Veterans Through Music

Walsh emphasizes that the auction proceeds will benefit VetsAid, which he founded in 2017 to help veterans’ organizations. Sharing his personal connection to the cause, he reflected on the long-term impact of wars like Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Fans can also attend or stream the 2025 VetsAid concert on November 15, featuring Vince Gill, Susan Tedeschi, Derek Trucks, Nathaniel Rateliff, and Ryan Bingham. The concert will stream live via Veeps at 7 PM EST for those who cannot attend in person.
