Jimmie Vaughan + Gary Clark Jr. Celebrate Buddy Guy With “Things That I Used To Do”

Jimmie Vaughan + Gary Clark Jr. Celebrate Buddy Guy With “Things That I Used To Do” | Society Of Rock Videos

Kennedy Center Honors, 2012

In 2012, Stevie Ray Vaughan’s family got the chance to say thank you to one of Stevie’s biggest influences when Jimmie Vaughan, together with fellow Texas guitar slinger Gary Clark, Jr. performed “Things That I Used To Do” at the Kennedy Center Honors, celebrating the nearly 60 year legacy of Chicago blues pioneer Buddy Guy. Guy, whose guitar playing influenced a generation of guitarists up to and including Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton and Jimmy Page, was present as Jimmie and Gary delivered a stunning performance of the Guitar Slim classic, channeling elements of both Buddy Guy and Stevie, both of whom made “Things That I Used To Do” famous.

While Jimmie Vaughan’s shared the stage with many a friend and admirer of his brother, enlisting the help of John Mayer and even Doyle Bramhall II, it was Austin-born guitarist Gary Clark, Jr. that was handpicked to jam with Jimmie for this momentous occasion.

Fun Fact: Gary Clark, Jr. united with Jimmie Vaughan again in 2015 for Stevie’s induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, sharing the stage with John Mayer, Doyle Bramhall II, and the remaining members of Double Trouble.

Just 28 at the time of this performance, Gary Clark Jr. held his own in a major way; we don’t know what it is, but there’s something about being from Texas that makes young bluesmen like Gary shine, especially when it comes to playing the guitar! Judging by the tears shed by Buddy Guy towards the end of the video, it’s pretty safe to say that he’s as moved as we were by such a fantastic tribute – and we know Stevie was there in spirit, absolutely glowing with pride.

+ The Things That I Used To Do lyrics +

The things that I used to do Lord, I won’t do no more
The things that I used to do Lord, I won’t do no more
I used to sit and hold your hand darlin’ and cry, oh babe do not go

I used to search all night for you darlin’
Lord, and my search would always end in vain
I used to search all night for you darlin’
Lord, and my search would always end in vain
But I knew all the time darlin’ That you was hid out wit’ your other man

I’m goin’ to send you back to your mama darlin’
Lord, and I’m goin’ back to my family too
I’m goin’ to send you back to your mama darlin’
Lord, and I’m goin’ back to my family too
Nothin’ I can do to please ya’ darlin’ I just can’t get along with you
