Comedian Jim Carrey took the stage at this year’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony to honor Soundgarden with an impassioned and heartfelt speech. He described the band as “one of the most majestic, powerful, and influential” groups in rock history.
Carrey looked back on the night he hosted Saturday Night Live in May 1996, with Soundgarden as the musical guest, calling it a moment that left a lasting impression on him.
“I stood right in front of them, letting the waves of electricity wash over me like an audio baptism,” Carrey said, remembering the band’s rehearsal of ‘Pretty Noose’. “They pushed me under, and when I came up, I was free.”
The comedian also recently shared a photo of the guitar that Chris Cornell gifted him during that SNL episode — a cherished reminder of their brief but meaningful connection nearly three decades ago.
Honoring Chris Cornell’s Legacy
Carrey’s tribute became even more poignant as he spoke about Chris Cornell, Soundgarden’s late frontman, offering a moving reflection on his artistic depth and presence.
“It felt like he had given us an all-access pass to some monumental apocalyptic dream he was having,” Carrey said. “He had a deeply authentic presence — when you looked into his eyes, it was like eternity was staring back.”
The audience responded with a standing ovation, recognizing Cornell’s enduring influence on rock music and the generations of artists inspired by his work.
A Legendary Class of 2025
Soundgarden joined a remarkable lineup of inductees in this year’s Hall of Fame class. Bad Company, Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, Cyndi Lauper, Outkast, and The White Stripes were honored in the Performer category. Warren Zevon and Salt-N-Pepa were celebrated for Musical Influence, while Carole Kaye, Thom Bell, and Nicky Hopkins received awards for Musical Excellence.
