Jeff Lynne kicked off the first show of ELO’s farewell Over and Out Tour on July 5 in Birmingham, England, but performed without his guitar due to a broken left hand.

Despite the injury, the 77-year-old music legend delivered a full 22-song set at the Utilita Arena, his hometown venue, marking the first of two scheduled shows there.

“I’ve had a guitar in my hand all my life, but not tonight,” Lynne told the supportive crowd. “Nothing would keep me away from you.”

Special Guests and Set Highlights

The concert featured a mix of ELO classics, including fan favorites, as well as The Move’s “Do Ya.” Dhani Harrison, son of George Harrison, joined Lynne on stage for two Traveling Wilburys tracks: “Handle With Care” and “End of the Line.”

Although Lynne didn’t explain how the injury happened, some fans on social media speculated it may have involved a taxi door accident.

Final Tour Dates and a Meaningful Goodbye

Following the Birmingham shows, Jeff Lynne’s ELO will perform in Manchester on July 9, with their final concert set for July 13 in London’s Hyde Park — the same venue where they relaunched their live performances in 2014.

“My return to touring began at Hyde Park,” Lynne said when the farewell show was announced.

“It seems like the perfect place to do our final show. We couldn’t be more excited to share this special night in London with our UK fans. As the song goes, ‘We’re gonna do it one more time!’”
