Janis Joplin – Summertime (Live -1969)

Janis Joplin – Summertime (Live -1969) | Society Of Rock Videos

This is by far one of my favorite covers of ALL TIME.

I can remember being a child in the late 80’s, and instead of the usual alarm clock for school, I would be woken up by this song on a regular basis (as well as the original composer George Gershwin), but that’s for another blog. Pretty amazing alarm clock, right? Thanks, Mom!
I was truly blessed to be exposed to the musical geniuses before my time at a very early age.

“Described as “without doubt … one of the finest songs the composer ever wrote … Gershwin’s highly evocative writing brilliantly mixes elements of jazz and the song styles of blacks in the southeast United States from the early twentieth century”.
With over 25,000 recordings of “Summertime” including covers by; Billie Holliday, Sam Cooke, The Marcels, and Billy Stewart… Janis really set herself apart. There was something so magical, and soothing about Janis’ voice. You can feel her passion, her love, and beauty coursing through her veins with every note she wailed.

Check out her chilling performance below!

<<LYRICS>>

Summertime, time, time,
Child, the living’s easy.
Fish are jumping out
And the cotton, Lord,
Cotton’s high, Lord, so high.Your daddy’s rich
And your ma is so good-looking, baby.
She’s looking good now,
Hush, baby, baby, baby, baby, baby,
No, no, no, no, don’t you cry.
Don’t you cry!One of these mornings
You’re gonna rise, rise up singing,
You’re gonna spread your wings,
Child, and take, take to the sky,
Lord, the sky.
But until that morning
Honey, n-n-nothing’s going to harm you now,
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
Don’t you cry,
Cry.
