RIP Mr. Davis

Another great musician has left us — Dennis Davis, David Bowie’s longtime drummer and whose smashing skills were present in not one but seven Bowie albums. On April 7, producer Tony Visconti confirmed on Facebook (in a short but touching message) that after battling lung cancer, Dennis has finally succumbed to the disease.

Dennis Davis has passed away. He was one of the most creative drummers I have ever worked with. He came into David…

As he was growing up, Dennis learned from the master jazz drummers Elvin Jones and Max Roach. He has also worked with Stevie Wonder, Iggy Pop, Carlos Santana and Jermaine Jackson to name a few.

In an interview with Uncut magazine in 1999, Bowie spoke about Davis’ playing on those records, calling him “a powerfully emotive drummer… The tempo not only ‘moved’ but also was expressed in more than ‘human’ fashion.”

Farewell to one majestic drummer. Dennis Davis, you will always be remembered.
