John Lennon, the legendary singer and songwriter of The Beatles, was tragically killed on December 8, 1980, when he was shot five times in the back while returning from a recording studio. On the 40th anniversary of this heartbreaking event, Lennon’s former bandmates shared their memories of him, reflecting on his enduring impact on the world.

Paul McCartney marked the day by posting a black and white photo of himself with Lennon on his official Twitter account. He expressed his deep sadness but also his gratitude for the joy Lennon brought to the world. “A sad, sad day but remembering my friend John with the great joy he brought to the world. I will always be proud and happy to have known and worked with this incredible Scouser!” McCartney wrote.

Ringo Starr also honored Lennon by sharing a vintage photo, highlighting the peaceful spirit that Lennon was known for. “Tuesday, 8 December 1980, we all had to say goodbye to John peace and love John. I’m asking Every music radio station in the world sometime today play ‘Strawberry Fields Forever.’ Peace and love,” Starr tweeted, asking for a tribute to one of The Beatles’ iconic songs.

Following his death, John Lennon was immortalized as a legend, with his musical and artistic contributions celebrated worldwide. His song “Imagine” became a universal anthem for peace, embodying the ideals Lennon championed in his final years. He, alongside his wife Yoko Ono, promoted messages of peace and love through their music, artistic performances, and activism.

In October of the 40th anniversary year, a special collection titled Gimme Some Truth: The Ultimate Mixes was released to commemorate what would have been Lennon’s 80th birthday. Produced by Yoko Ono and their son Sean Lennon, the collection featured 36 tracks from Lennon’s solo career, alongside a CD, vinyl, high-definition Blu-ray, poster, and a 100-page book.

John Lennon’s killer, Mark David Chapman, was sentenced to life in prison for the murder in 1980. Despite numerous requests for parole, all have been denied. Chapman, now 69, remains incarcerated, while Lennon’s legacy of peace and music continues to inspire generations.
