Geddy and Alex Send a Message to Rush Fans

Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson—two bandmates and lifelong friends—who hadn’t spoken in years, have found their way back to music and to each other. What began as a simple jam session turned into something much more meaningful. In their cozy basement studio, where they used to write songs and hang out late into the night, a spark was reignited.
One of them hit a tight chord and instantly recognized that something was different this time. “That was a lot better than the last 15 times,” one of them joked. They both laughed—because they knew that sometimes, even a single chord can feel like the hardest thing in the world. But this time, it wasn’t just about the notes. It was about reconnecting.
From Quiet to Loud
That studio had been quiet for a long time. After 2015, especially following the loss of their close friend and bandmate Neil Peart, a melancholy filled the air. The music didn’t sound the same anymore. But everything changed during the tribute performances for Taylor Hawkins. Stepping back on stage and playing their own songs for the first time in years stirred something unexpected.
“It was bittersweet,” one of them reflected. But the experience moved them deeply.
Soon after, they began jamming again in the basement—just for fun. Old songs. Familiar riffs. And the more they played, the more the joy returned. In no time, they were fully immersed again.
The Big Choice
Eventually, they reached a crossroads. What began as casual playing had grown into something impossible to ignore. “We’re going back on tour,” they said with a smile—a declaration that meant everything.
It felt strange but exciting to say it out loud. At their core, they are musicians, and going back to their roots reminded them how special their music truly is. Revisiting their songs brought a deeper appreciation for the lyrics, the complexity of the arrangements, and the memories wrapped in every note.
This tour isn’t just another round of gigs—it’s a celebration. A chance to reconnect with fans, the music, and each other.
Moving Forward While Honoring the Past
One of the most rewarding parts has been creating the setlist. With around 35 songs in the mix, they’re planning shows that will last a couple of hours. And though the set may vary each night to keep things fresh, one thing will stay constant: a moment in every performance to honor Neil Peart.
“He’ll always be part of the show,” they said. It’s their way of keeping his spirit alive and sharing it with audiences night after night.
Still, it raised a difficult question: How do you replace someone who can’t be replaced?
That’s when a new name entered the conversation: Anika Nilles, a dynamic drummer known for her precision, strength, and musicality. A trusted crew member who had toured with Jeff Beck recommended her, and during rehearsals, something clicked.
Playing with her brought a new energy. The songs started to feel alive again. And with that realization, they knew they could move forward—honoring the past while embracing what’s next.
A New Era, A Bigger Band
As the tour draws closer, they’re also considering expanding the live band. One of them mentioned how great it would be to simply step back and be “the bass player” again during certain parts of the show. Adding a keyboardist is also on the table—especially for classic tracks like “Tom Sawyer,” where the iconic synth parts are essential to the sound.
Not only would this give the core members more flexibility, but it might also transform the live experience in new and exciting ways.
Of course, they joked, it might finally give them time to practice the dance moves they’ve been talking about for years.
Hugs, Laughs, and Looking Ahead
The chemistry between these two bandmates is undeniable. They’ve shared decades of music, memories, and more than a few difficult moments. But now, the studio is filled with laughter again. Their voices are filled with excitement. And yes—there was even a hug to seal the deal.
After all these years, they’re ready to hit the road again.
And if those basement jam sessions are any indication, fans are in for something truly special. The message is clear: Geddy and Alex are back—and they’re ready to make some noise.
