On March 5, 2023, Gary Rossington, the last original member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, passed away at the age of 71. Born on December 4, 1951, in Jacksonville, Florida, Rossington co-founded the iconic Southern rock band in 1964, alongside Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins, Larry Junstrom, and Bob Burns. The group initially performed under names like My Backyard and The Noble Five before settling on Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1969, a playful nod to a high school gym teacher.

Rossington’s distinctive guitar work became a cornerstone of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s sound. His slide guitar solo in “Free Bird” and the riffs in “Sweet Home Alabama” exemplify his contribution to the band’s musical identity. These tracks not only showcased his talent but also played a significant role in defining the Southern rock genre.

Rise to Fame, Tragic Plane Crash, and Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Subsequent Legacy

The band’s rise to fame was marked by relentless touring and a string of successful albums. However, tragedy struck on October 20, 1977, when their chartered plane crashed in Mississippi. The accident claimed the lives of lead singer Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist Steve Gaines, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines, and others. Rossington survived but sustained serious injuries, including broken arms, legs, and internal damage.

Following the crash, Lynyrd Skynyrd disbanded. In 1980, Rossington and Collins formed the Rossington Collins Band, releasing two albums before disbanding in 1982. In 1987, Lynyrd Skynyrd reunited for a tribute tour, with Ronnie’s younger brother, Johnny Van Zant, stepping in as lead vocalist. Rossington’s presence was pivotal in this revival, ensuring the band’s legacy endured.

Despite health challenges in later years, including heart issues that led to surgeries, Rossington remained committed to performing. His dedication to Lynyrd Skynyrd and its fans was unwavering, solidifying his status as a rock legend.
