A Special Deluxe Release of “4”

As Foreigner nears its 50th anniversary, the band announced a major release of their 1981 hit album 4. On September 12, Rhino will release a deluxe edition titled Foreigner 4 Deluxe. This version will be available in black vinyl and other formats. It was recorded at Electric Lady Studios in New York with producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange, known for working with Def Leppard and AC/DC.

The release will include remastered Stereo and Atmos mixes, and a five-disc CD/Blu-ray box set. It will also feature a booklet with over 60 rare photos, five unreleased songs, 14 early versions, 15 instrumental takes, and 15 live tracks from the band’s 1981–1982 world tour. Digital versions will carry similar content, including live recordings and alternates.

The Original Impact of “4”

4 came out on July 2, 1981, and quickly rose to the top of the Billboard chart, holding the number-one spot longer than any other Atlantic Records artist, including Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones. It sold over 10 million copies globally and was certified six times Platinum in the U.S. The album produced several big hits like “Urgent,” “Juke Box Hero,” and “Waiting For A Girl Like You.”

It was also a turning point for the band, moving from a six-member group to four members. Founding guitarist Mick Jones reflected on its creation:
“Recording our fourth album took the better part of two years. It was something that just had to be right and I truly believe that Mutt Lange, Lou [Gramm], Rick [Willis], Dennis [Elliott] and I accomplished something very special. This package, and particularly the stunning Atmos mixes, present a spectacular culmination of one of the most exciting periods of my life.”

New Tour with Lou Gramm Returning

To go along with the deluxe release, Foreigner will launch the Foreigner 4 Deluxe Tour later this year. The band lineup now includes Luis Maldonado (vocals/guitar), Jeff Pilson (bass), Michael Bluestein (keyboards), Bruce Watson (guitar), and Chris Frazier (drums). Original singer Lou Gramm will join them on select dates to perform songs he helped create more than four decades ago.

This tour also marks the first major U.S. shows with Maldonado as the lead singer. Kelly Hansen recently wrapped up his final tour with the band after announcing his departure on The Voice season finale.

Luis Maldonado Shares His Thoughts

Maldonado talked about what it means to play with Lou Gramm again:
“Earlier this year, we toured Mexico and South America with the incredible Lou Gramm. We all had such a fantastic time performing and being together, and it’s with that same excitement I look forward to working with Lou again. He was an integral part of the writing and recording of the Foreigner 4 album and his presence will add a historic dimension to our forthcoming tour.”

A Legacy of Hits

Foreigner’s debut in 1977 gave fans memorable songs like “Feels Like the First Time,” “Cold As Ice,” and “Long, Long Way From Home.” More albums followed, including Double Vision and Head Games, with hits like “Hot Blooded,” “Blue Morning, Blue Day,” and “Dirty White Boy.” Then came 4 with “Urgent” and “Juke Box Hero.”

Their 1984 album Agent Provocateur featured their first number-one hit, “I Want To Know What Love Is,” which added to their reputation for emotional rock ballads. These songs helped cement Foreigner’s place in rock history.
