Brian May has teamed up with 10cc co-founder Graham Gouldman and released a new song titled “Floating In Heaven,” inspired by the James Webb Space Telescope.
The Queen’s guitarist is a lifelong space enthusiast. He once said in a statement:
“There is nothing more exciting in a world of exploration than going to a place about which you know nothing.
“The sky’s the limit for what we could find out.”
James Webb Space Telescope was launched in December 2021 and was described as the most powerful device to ever send into space. The same week the apparatus became operational, “Floating In Heaven” was released with an accompanied music video showing clips and images of how the tool works.
May provided the guitar and vocals, while Gouldman did the songwriting duties on the song that has astronomical lyrics, such as the opening verse that leads into the chorus:
“It’s time for me to say goodbye and search for past is new / Our future lies above the clouds, above the sky so blue / I’ve never seen the moon so white / I’ve never seen the sun so bright / I’m floating in heaven / I’m so high”
Some fans might not know that May actually has a Ph.D. in astrophysics from London’s Imperial College. On Queen’s classic 1975 album A Night at the Opera, May wrote the song “39,” which talks about a fictional tale of a group of astronauts who returns to Earth following a year in space, only to discover a century has passed. In 2019, May also released the solo song “New Horizons” with NASA launching it into space on New Year’s Day.
