Stevie Nicks has firmly stated that Fleetwood Mac will not reunite, marking an end to the iconic band’s era following the death of bandmate Christine McVie in 2022. In an intimate reveal to Mojo, Nicks expressed, “Without Christine, no can do. There is no chance of putting Fleetwood Mac back together in any way. Without her, it just couldn’t work.” These earnest words reflect the depth of the bond shared among the band members and the integral role McVie played.

Fleetwood Mac’s Final Curtain and Nicks’ Heartfelt Reflections

The group last performed together in 2019, concluding a tour that saw Neil Finn of Crowded House and Mike Campbell from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers step in. This lineup change came after Lindsey Buckingham’s departure from Fleetwood Mac in 2018, signaling a significant shift in the band’s dynamics.

Nicks reminisced about the shock of McVie’s sudden passing, “It was all stunningly strange because there wasn’t any lead-up to it. We got a call, and I was going to rent a plane and go see her, but her family said, ‘Don’t come, because she may not be here tomorrow.’ And the next day, she passed away.” Nicks shared a touching, albeit humorous, sentiment about her intended farewell, “I wanted to go there and sit on her bed and sing to her – which definitely would have made her pass away faster,” she joked. Nonetheless, her regret in not being able to say goodbye resonates with the pain of losing a close friend and collaborator.

Legacy and Moving Forward

Fleetwood Mac’s legacy includes moments of both unity and discord, with Christine McVie’s departure between 1998 and 2014, and a brief reunion with Buckingham in 2017 for an album project, before he left again amidst escalating tensions. Nicks suggested the possibility of a farewell tour, including Buckingham, yet she noted his health concerns following a heart attack and subsequent surgery in 2019, “Even if I thought I could work with Lindsey again, he’s had some health problems. It’s not for me to say, but I’m not sure if Lindsey could do the kind of touring that Fleetwood Mac does, where you go out for a year and a half. It’s so demanding.”

As Nicks continues to tour solo, wrapping up her spring performances and planning overseas shows, she keeps the spirit of Fleetwood Mac alive through her music. “Fleetwood Mac is all over my set,” she told Mojo. The absence of the band opens up her setlist to include songs she hadn’t performed solo before, like “The Chain.” Nicks vows to keep the band’s music alive as long as she can, ensuring that the legacy of Fleetwood Mac, and Christine McVie’s contributions, continue to resonate with fans around the world.
