FLEETWOOD MAC GYPSY

FLEETWOOD MAC GYPSY | Society Of Rock Videos

Stevie sings about loss, but you might be surprised to find out just what was taken from her…

I had no idea what this song was about until now… wow.

Stevie Nicks wrote this song and planned to include it on her 1980 solo album, Bella Donna. She didn’t have room for it on the album, so she held it over for Fleetwood Mac’s Mirage album. By this time, her friend Robin Anderson was dying of leukemia and the song became a tribute to her.

In a 1990 interview with US magazine, Nicks explained that Robin was one of her best friends, and was devastated when she got the news that her friend had developed leukemia- a few months later she became pregnant. Doctors had advised to take the baby at just six and half months- Robin died two days later.

“When she died, I went crazy. I just went insane. And so did her husband… I was determined to take care of that baby, so I said to Kim (Robins husband), ‘I don’t know, I guess we should just get married.'”

Nicks describes her marriage to Kim, a terrible mistake – they divorced just three months later. Although she hasn’t seen the baby since the divorce, she has said that when the child is ready to find her, she has a book that she wrote the year Robin died, and a roomful of stuff for him. “I have his mother to give back to him when he’s ready.”

+Gypsy lyrics below+

So I’m back, to the velvet underground
Back to the floor, that I love
To a room with some lace and pAper flowers
Back to the gypsy that I was
To the gypsy… that I was
And it all comes down to you
Well, you know that it does
Well, lightning strikes, maybe once, maybe twice
Ah, and it lights up the night
And you see your gypsy
You see your gypsy
To the gypsy that remains faces freedom with a little fear
I have no fear, I have only love
And if I was a child
And the child was enough
Enough for me to love
Enough to love
She is dancing away from me now
She was just a wish
She was just a wish
And a memory is all that is left for you now
You see your gypsy
You see your gypsy
Lightning strikes, maybe once, maybe twice
And it all comes down to you
And it all comes down to you
Lightning strikes, maybe once, maybe twice
And it all comes down to you
I still see your bright eyes, bright eyes
And it all comes down to you
I still see your bright eyes, bright eyes
And it all comes down to you
I still see your bright eyes, bright eyes
(She was just a wish)
(She was just a wish)
And it all comes down to you
Lightning strikes, maybe once, maybe twice
And it all comes down to you
