Nicks channels heartbreak into anthem for all

This is one of my all time favorite Fleetwood Mac songs, and this live performance is even better. Stevie Nicks in my eyes is my spirit animal. She encompasses everything I believe the 60’s and 70’s were about. She was beautiful, magical, and original.

Written by Nicks for the 1977 album, Rumours, the song went on to be one of the bands greatest hits. Fun fact! It is the ONLY song to hit number one the States (how crazy is that), and sold over a million copies!

During the recording of Rumours, the band was going through an emotional roller coaster. Nicks said of her experience writing the song,

“I walked in and handed a cassette of the song to Lindsey. It was a rough take, just me singing solo and playing piano. Even though he was mad with me at the time, Lindsey played it and then looked up at me and smiled. What was going on between us was sad. We were couples who couldn’t make it through. But, as musicians, we still respected each other – and we got some brilliant songs out of it.”

Regardless of the emotional turmoil the band was going through, they were able to channel their personal frustrations into something positive. Stevie recalls finding a drum pattern on her keyboard, and wrote the song in 10 minutes. How can a song written in that short of time become one of the greatest songs of all time!? It was honest and came from her heart.

Check out my girl, Stevie!

+++++LYRICS+++++

Now here you go again, you say
You want your freedom
Well who am I to keep you down
It’s only right that you should
Play the way you feel it
But listen carefully to the sound
Of your loneliness
Like a heartbeat drives you mad
In the stillness of remembering what you had
And what you lost, and what you had, and what you lost

Thunder only happens when it’s raining
Players only love you when they’re playing
Say women they will come and they will go
When the rain washes you clean, you’ll know, you’ll know

Now here I go again, I see the crystal visions
I keep my visions to myself, it’s only me
Who wants to wrap around your dreams and,
Have you any dreams you’d like to sell?
Dreams of loneliness,
Like a heartbeat, drives you mad
In the stillness of remembering, what you had,
And what you lost and what you had and what you lost

Thunder only happens when it’s raining
Players only love you when they’re playing
Say, women, they will come and they will go
When the rain washes you clean, you’ll know

Thunder only happens when it’s raining
Players only love you when they’re playing
Say, women, they will come and they will go
When the rain washes you clean, you’ll know
You’ll know, you will know, you’ll know
