In September 1975, Wilson was performing at the Latin Casino, a popular venue in New Jersey. While singing his iconic hit “Lonely Teardrops,” he suffered a massive heart attack on stage. The sudden collapse shocked the audience, many of whom initially thought his fall was part of the performance. Tragically, Wilson struck his head on the stage during the fall, causing severe trauma.
The immediate aftermath of the incident revealed the extent of the damage. Wilson was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors determined that the combination of the heart attack and the head injury had left him with significant brain damage. He slipped into a coma and, although he eventually emerged from it, he remained in a severely impaired state. For the remaining nine years of his life, Wilson required round-the-clock care in medical facilities.

The circumstances surrounding Wilson’s health decline also shed light on the financial struggles he faced. Despite his fame and influence, Wilson did not benefit from the lucrative contracts that many modern artists enjoy. Poor financial management and exploitative industry practices left him with limited resources.
