Lindsey Buckingham recently shared his nostalgia for performing “The Chain” with Fleetwood Mac.
The guitarist posted a video on X of himself playing the iconic song, captioning it:
“Some songs just stay with you.”
“The Chain,” from Fleetwood Mac’s legendary Rumours album, holds a special place in Buckingham’s heart. The track, which credits all five members of the bandโBuckingham, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwoodโhas become emblematic of their musical journey.
Buckingham’s Reflections on “The Chain”
Reflecting on the song, Buckingham previously highlighted its significance beyond being a concert opener. He explained:
โThe thing about โThe Chainโ is, yes, itโs a signature piece of ours. Itโs also the spirit of the song and the content lyrically is very much in keeping with the legacy we built over a long period of time of always being able to rise above the difficulties in order to fulfill a greater destiny, so there was always a chain.โ
The songโs high point, particularly its solo, stemmed from an impromptu jam session in the studio. Buckingham elaborated on how the solo captured the raw energy of the moment:
โIt just all came out in the studio when we were recording. A lot of the emotion of those moments like that solo are very connected to what we were living.โ
Mick Fleetwood’s Insights on “The Chain”
Mick Fleetwood also reminisced about the song’s creation, praising the thematic riff as a major contribution. He said:
โโThe Chainโ basically came out of a jam. It was put together, as distinct from someone literally sitting down and writing a song. It was very much collectively a band composition.โ
Following the success of Rumours, “The Chain” became a staple in Fleetwood Macโs live performances, often serving as the opening track. It was also featured as the first track on their 1997 live album The Dance and has appeared on numerous greatest hits compilations.
Buckinghamโs recent video and heartfelt caption remind fans of the enduring power of “The Chain” and its significant place in Fleetwood Macโs storied career.
