Exploring Metallica’s Lineup Of Country Songs

via Metallica / Youtube

While the combination of country and Metallica may seem unexpected, it’s not as unusual as it seems.

Many prominent country artists admire the thrash legends. When The Metallica Blacklist compilation was released in 2021, stars like Chris Stapleton, Darius Rucker, Jon Pardi, and Jason Isbell all covered Black Album classics.

Metallica’s appreciation for country music, particularly from frontman James Hetfield, is well-documented. He has shared stories about his friendship with Waylon Jennings, including the tale behind Load’s “Wasting My Hate,” and covered Jennings’ “Don’t You Think This Outlaw Bit’s Done Got Out of Hand” for CMT Outlaws.

Hetfield’s T-shirt choices, often featuring classic rock bands or supporting his son’s band Bastardane, also sometimes highlight rising country artists like Colter Wall. Additionally, the band has collaborated with folk artist Avi Vinocur for their acoustic performances.

Given these connections, it’s not surprising that some country influences have found their way into Metallica’s music.

“Ronnie” (Load)
Though the lyrics deal with a violent tragedy like a school shooting, the rhythm has a groovy, country beat. Hetfield’s vocal delivery in the bridge and Hammett’s roots-oriented solo add to the song’s country vibe.

“Mama Said” (Load)
This acoustic track immerses the band in a country setting, with influences including a harmonizing chorus and pedal steel guitar. The music video further highlights Hetfield’s embrace of country elements.

“Don’t Tread on Me” (‘The Black Album)
While the song is one of the heavier tracks on The Black Album, its patriotic and individualistic lyrics are reminiscent of country themes. Lines like “Liberty or death, what we so proudly hail” could easily fit into a country anthem.

“Low Man’s Lyric” (Reload)
Featuring the hurdy-gurdy, an instrument related to the fiddle family, this song brings a unique folk sound. Hetfield’s lyrics, such as “There’s a dog at your backstep / He must come in from the rain,” channel the simplicity of country songwriting.

“The Unforgiven” Trilogy (‘The Black Album,’ Reload, Death Magnetic)
Combining pensive themes with a near twang in “The Unforgiven II” and an almost drawl in “The Unforgiven III,” this trilogy bridges hard rock and outlaw country. The ongoing theme of sin and its consequences gives it a country-storytelling feel.
