Eddie Vedder’s annual Ohana Music Festival opened Friday at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, California. The Pearl Jam frontman led a lineup that included Hozier, Green Day, Kings of Leon, Leon Bridges, Cage the Elephant, and others. The festival is known for surprise performances. Last year Pearl Jam covered Taylor Swift, while a previous edition featured Foo Fighters playing “Stairway to Heaven.” This year followed that tradition with several unexpected moments.
Vedder’s band The Earthlings—featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, producer and guitarist Andrew Watt, The Frames frontman Glen Hansard, and current AC/DC bassist Chris Chaney—began their set with Devo’s “Gut Feeling.” They also performed The Who’s “I’m One” and the outro of Led Zeppelin’s “The Song Remains the Same,” showing a mix of influences and playful energy.
Not stopping there, Vedder joined Tedeschi Trucks Band onstage for a cover of The Who’s 1970 single “The Seeker.” Sharing lead vocals with Susan Tedeschi, Vedder matched her strong delivery while Tedeschi and Derek Trucks exchanged fiery guitar solos. The crowd welcomed the collaboration as a standout moment of the night.
