Donald Trump Gets Hit With Cease-and-desist Order From Gibson Guitars

The newly launched Trump Guitars line has run into legal trouble with Gibson Guitars. The cease-and-desist was issued, however, not because of any political reason, but over its design patent. According to Guitar World, Gibson claims the single-cut electric guitar design from the Trump series infringes on its exclusive trademarks, particularly the iconic Les Paul body shape.
What Trump Guitars Are All About
Created by the company 16 Creative, Trump Guitars are part of the limited-edition American Eagle Guitar Series. While Donald Trump is not believed to own the company, the guitars are advertised as “The Only Guitar Officially Endorsed by President Donald J. Trump.” Promotional material even features Trump holding one of the instruments, and some guitars come with his signature.
The design is full of patriotic flair: the slogan “Make America Great Again” is inlaid in authentic pearl along the guitar’s neck, and the number “45” is stamped on the headstock. The body showcases an American eagle set against an American flag backdrop.
The Presidential Series within the collection offers additional designs with black, gold, and red finishes. Details about the series can be found on the Trump Guitars website. However, these guitars are notably absent from Trump’s official store, which features items like hats, apparel, and golf accessories.
Why Gibson Took Legal Action
In a statement to Guitar World, a Gibson spokesperson confirmed the cease-and-desist:
“We can confirm a cease-and-desist has been issued against 16 Creative as the design infringes upon Gibson’s exclusive trademarks, particularly the iconic Les Paul body shape.”
Gibson has a history of protecting its intellectual property, including a lengthy legal battle with Dean Guitars over similar design disputes. This latest issue with Trump Guitars underscores Gibson’s commitment to safeguarding its iconic designs.
For now, it remains to be seen how 16 Creative will respond to Gibson’s legal challenge.
