After nearly 60 years of marriage, Dolly Parton lost her husband, Carl Thomas Dean, in March. Since then, the country music legend has focused on staying busy with her career as a way to cope with the loss. However, she revealed that she has temporarily put writing new music on hold because she doesn’t feel she has the “luxury” to fully process her emotions right now.
During an appearance on the Khloe in Wonderland podcast, Dolly opened up about how grief has affected her creativity. When asked about writer’s block, she explained that her many commitments have kept her occupied. “There are several things I want to start, but I just can’t do it yet,” she said. “I have all these beautiful ideas, but I don’t think I’ll finish them now because I’m juggling so much.”
Despite her busy schedule, Dolly said working helps her avoid dwelling too much on her husband’s passing. “I can’t afford the luxury of getting emotional right now,” she admitted. “Sometimes grief can slow you down, but I’ll write again if inspiration comes. For now, it’s on hold.”
A Heartfelt Tribute to Carl
Although new projects are paused, Dolly honored Carl with the emotional song “If You Hadn’t Been There.” The heartfelt tribute reflects the deep support he gave her throughout her career.
Fans praised the song’s sincerity online, with one writing, “Dolly and her husband were truly in love—that’s something to admire.” Another added, “That’s the sweetest goodbye I’ve ever heard. Rest in peace, Carl.”
Looking Ahead to the Future
While Dolly is taking this time to heal, she is expected to return to the studio when the moment feels right. Fans eagerly await new music, confident that whatever she creates next will be heartfelt and meaningful.
