Former Styx singer Dennis DeYoung has joined forces with Rage Against The Machine guitarist Tom Morello for a new song titled “The Last Guitar Hero.” It’s featured on DeYoung’s upcoming studio album “26 East Vol. 2”, due for release on June 11 via Frontier Records. This will serve as DeYoung’s final record.
“My musical goals for this album were the same as they have always been and that was to write the best songs possible and make great sounding records out of them,” DeYoung told Sonic Perspectives. “By now, Styx fans know pretty much what they can expect and I hope they will be pleased. I am.”
He added, “The last album was supposed to be my final album, but there were so many songs written that Serafino [Perugino] of Frontiers suggested dividing it into two albums rather than one.”
Meanwhile, Tom Morello took to Twitter to share how DeYoung approached him for the collaboration. Apparently, DeYoung reached out to him “sheepishly” and said, “Hi Tom, I’m not sure if you’re familiar with my music but…”
Morello then replied, “Stop right there!! EVERY single time I’m in my hometown I PACK the jukebox at the local bar with those great Styx songs all night long! Man Of Miracles? Renegade? Suite Madam Blue? Mr. Mother Flippin’ Roboto?! Fellow Illinois rocker, it would be an honor.”
