Deep Purple has unveiled the music video for their latest track “Lazy Sod,” a preview from their upcoming album =1.
Following their 2021 covers collection Turning to Crime, this album marks their first collaboration with guitarist Simon McBride, who took over from Steve Morse two years ago. “Lazy Sod” stands as the third single from the LP, following the releases of “Portable Door” and “Pictures of You.”
Reflecting on the song’s origins, singer Ian Gillan shared:
“A young journalist recently asked me how many songs I’ve written in my life. I proudly said over 500, until she mentioned Dolly Parton’s 5,000 songs and called me a lazy sod. I couldn’t help but chuckle and noted it down in my notebook.”
Released under their earMusic label, =1 captures the essence and spirit of Deep Purple’s 1970s era, perhaps more than any recent album. Produced once again by the legendary Bob Ezrin, the record pays homage to the band’s classic sound while embracing a contemporary approach, avoiding mere nostalgia.
Describing the album’s enigmatic title, earMusic hinted, “The title =1 signifies the concept that amidst a complex world, everything ultimately simplifies to a single, unified essence. Everything equals one.” Further details and artwork teasers have sparked fan speculation, with mysterious equations and multiverse imagery appearing in major cities like London, Paris, and Berlin in recent days.
Deep Purple is gearing up to join Yes for a North American tour beginning on August 14th, promising a blend of classic hits and new material for their devoted fanbase.
