At the recent MTV’s Video Music Awards, David Lee Roth paid tribute to his former bandmate and the late legend Eddie Van Halen. He did this while walking the red carpet. For the past few years, it has become pretty rare for rockstars to show up at the event.
The show aired on September 12 from New York City’s Barclays Center. In an interview with US Weekly, which you can watch below, he said “my guitarist passed away.”
“He’s either in heaven raisin’ hell. Or he’s in hell, consequently in heaven,” Roth told the interviewer. “Read into that as you wish. And he would have me say it just like that. And I carry on that spirit deliberately.”
Diamond Dave also added that he “just spoke to Alex Van Halen. We’re about to celebrate our 50th year or ragging on each other.”
Roth closed the show by handing out the final award, Video of the Year, to to rapper-singer Lil Nas X for his “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” music video. Other rockers who showed up at MTV’s Video Music Awards include Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl, Travis Barker, and Tommy Lee. Foo Fighters were also honored with the Global Icon Award.
